Shadows Over Westgate takes place in the [https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page Forgotten Realms] campaign setting, upon which the original [https://nwn.fandom.com/wiki/Neverwinter_Nights Neverwinter Nights] game, its sequel, [https://nwn2.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page Neverwinter Nights 2], the [https://baldursgate.fandom.com/wiki/Baldur%27s_Gate_Wiki Baldur's Gate] franchise, and the massively multiplayer online roleplaying game [https://neverwinter.fandom.com/wiki/Neverwinter_Wiki Neverwinter] are all based.
The Forgotten Realms is a rich, high-fantasy world filled with magic, ancient empires, divine beings, and vast, varied civilizations. Created by Ed Greenwood, it is the most iconic setting for the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop roleplaying game.
Set primarily on the continent of [https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Faer%C3%BBn Faerûn], the Realms is a place of constant political intrigue, magical discovery, and conflict between gods, mortals, monsters, and planar beings. Stories in the Forgotten Realms range from intimate tavern tales to world-shaking catastrophes.
Shadows Over Westgate, however, takes a different approach to the setting. The timeline of the Forgotten Realms lore forks at around [https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/1358_DR 1358 DR], at the advent of the [https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/The_Time_of_Troubles Time of Troubles], and a new history is written.
The events of the in-game world begin somewhere in the middle of [https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/1372_DR 1372 DR], the same year that the [https://nwn.fandom.com/wiki/Original_campaign original campaign] concludes in, and all events following this point are frozen. Only those which are narrated into the server itself are set to occur.
Many small adjustments to the atmosphere are explained in the Shadows Over Westgate The Timeline of Shadows Over Westgate, and are all intended to pivot into a more focused “gothic fantasy” angle for the game world. These splinters in history allow us, and you as a player, to tell the story the way that we want to, to allow a more immersive experience.
Westgate is no shining bastion. It never was. It is shadow and silk, poison and poetry. A city where masked nobles bargain with fiends, thieves pray to forgotten gods, and justice is measured in gold or blood. In the alleys, whispers become daggers. In the towers, magic and ambition climb side by side. For some, it is home–a refuge away from the damnation and madness of the realms beyond. For others, it is damnation and madness itself. This is not a world of heroes. It is a stage for the desperate, the doomed, and the driven.
Because Westgate is different. It's old, it's cracked, and it's gilded in rot. The gods walked here once—some in secret, some in shame. Here, a sharp mind might rise to power, or drown in wine, or both. Here, faiths clash behind shuttered windows. Here, even monsters pay taxes… or run for office. This is the Realms' most dangerous port. If you're seeking a deep roleplay experience where choices matter, masks conceal, and every deal has a cost, step into the world and make your mark… or die trying.
